Hobbyco has been the city's hobby counter since 1938, and its QVB store is the full spread: model kits and paints, Gundam and Gunpla, LEGO sets, model trains and scenery, diecast cars and the puzzle wall at the back. Two floors of stock, nothing behind glass you can't ask to see.
The staff are the reason to come in person rather than order online. Ask about a kit and you'll get someone who builds them — what glue to use, which paint range matches, whether a beginner should start with this one or the cheaper one. Saturday mornings are busiest; a weekday afternoon is the calmer browse.
It sits on Levels 2 and 3 of the Queen Victoria Building, so it's an easy stop between Town Hall and the QVB's food arcade. Gift-wrapping for kids' birthday presents is a quiet house speciality.
